A Starry Night Bathroom Floor

Are you the handy type and know how to tile and grout a floor, the this may be the perfect DIY project for you.

Create your own magical starry night within the comfort of your bathroom. Create a look that is sophisticated, snazzy and just overall awesome and this is what you need...

  • A floor
  • Fibre optic cables
  • Light source
  • A gland
  • Scissors
  • Hot knife
  • Sparkly tapes/Cable ties
  • All the materials necessary to tile a floor (tiles, adhesive, grout, a float, a squeegee etc.)
Once you've gathered all your materials, the most important thing to do is to decide where your light source will come from and how many fibres you need per square meter of floor. The most wonderful thing about fibre optics is that if you shine light at one end, it'll come out of the other. This is ideal for keeping the light source outside of the bathroom for safety purposes, therefore meaning on electricity in the floor as all you need is a bit of fibre weaved under the floorboards and through the grout.

Unlike normal tiling projects where you would usually start from the center and work your way out, this project requires you to start on the tiles that are closest to the light source.

Next you'll need pour cement and position your fibre optics into place of where you'd like to have the stars. Make sure to leave a bit of the fibre sticking out for the later steps. Once the tiling has been set, it's time to grout as normal but taking extra care going around the fibres.

Just one more step once the grouting has dried, you'll need to grab a hot knife and trim the fibres so they are flush to the tiles.

Then for the moment of truth, switch it on and be in awe of your wonderful new starry night floor!

But remember fibre optics have many different uses...

Why don't you give it a go and tell us about your project...
