Monthly style update - What is Contemporary Design

Contemporary means existing, occurring, or living at the same time. This is the same for the use of the term in interior design. Contemporary design refers to what is popular or used right now. Modern refers to a period of time, this style was created in the 1920's - 1950's. It doesn't change, it is a defined style. Contemporary however will remain forever changing. It is of the moment and constantly changing.

You may like a contemporary style of decorating if you like to keep current with styles and enjoy things that are modern, of today, right now. There are variations on contemporary, this is where you will see products and styles of fabrics that have been modified and brought in to the current style like certain themes such as Contemporary Retro with certain twists.

The difference between Contemporary and Minimalism can cause some confusion and this is because quite often they are both in awe of defined space and streamline objects with no fuss. Minimalism is stripped back to the bare elements, colours, shapes and textures. Its purpose is to make the content stand out and be the focal point. Minimalism is all about bringing the mind down to the basics to create a calming space so therefore the style is normally quite bare.

Monthly style update - Minimalist Living

This type of home is to be free of clutter. The window treatments are simple, plain or bare. The walls are normally plain colours mostly white although you can use other solid colours. A minimalist normally likes quality over quantity. Clear floors and clear surfaces are a must. To add a splash of colour to a minimalist home is normally added with a vase, fruit bowl or interesting plant.

There is a difference between a minimalist home and a contemporary home as I know this seems to confuse many people which I will enlighten on next month.
